Marking One Year (I)

Chicago's Palestinian Community marked the first anniversary of the October 7th attack by Hamas with a demonstration at Jane Byrne Plaza, followed by a march northward that saw the demonstrators pass nearby Governor JB Pritzker's Gold Coast home. Here are my thoughts about and images from the rally and march.

DJT At The Hilton

Former President Donald Trump came to Chicago today for what was a disastrous Q & A session at the National Association of Black Journalists annual conference. As usual, I was in the streets outside the Hilton, recalling the riots that broke out during the 1968 Democratic Convention. Here are my thoughts about what transpired on the streets, as well as my photographs.

In Memoriam

Friday, February 16, 2024 will go down in history as a dark day, particularly for the Russian People. Tonight, Chicago’s Russian Community to pay tribute to Alexei Navalny in what proved to be a solemn memorial for another one of Vladimir Putin’s victims. Here are my thoughts about and images from the evening.

Fire & Fury II

Chicago is shrouded in dense ground fog.  It is difficult to identify buildings just two or three blocks down the avenues.  Fog obscures, but it also amplifies colors, which brings a certain clarity to the urban landscape.  It creates a mysterious whirl in the air.

So when the Lord blesses us with a day or two of January temperatures in the forties, we hit the streets.  Today, it was Grant Park and the Women's March.  Some 300,000 people showed up, breaking last year's attendance number by about 50,000 people.

Gutsy Protest

I was headed downtown today to photograph the cold.  As the 146 bus approached the Wrigley building I noticed, to my delight, a demonstration across the Michigan Avenue, in the plaza that abuts the Tribune Tower and the international style building just south of the Tribune.

Today, somewhere between 200 and 400 people marched from Federal Plaza to the intersection of Wacker and Wabash (Chicago's official anti-Trump demonstration site) to protest the weekend's events in Charlottesville and President's Trump's multiple responses to it.  Clearly his 2-hour old comments from the lobby of the Trump Tower in New York City added fuel to the fire.

Newberry Book Fair

The Newberry Library is holding its annual book fair this weekend.  There are somewhere around 130,000 books, records, and related items for sale.  I have to say, book fairs are not my thing, maybe because we already have too many books and records in our house.  Despite my reservations, the fair is a big deal.  I arrived shortly after the 10AM opening.  The first floor was already packed, with people looking for bargains and gems.

Public Art

On Monday of this week, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events installed a statue by Chicago artist Scott Reader across the river from the Trump Tower.  As is evident, the statue is simply the words "Real Fake" in gold lettering.  Quite appropriate for anything associated with President Donald J. Trump.

Covfefe

Covfefe made it into the demonstration lexicon at Chicago's March for Truth today.   This was the poster of the day, even though the Photoshopping is less than desirable.

Normalized

After spending the better part of five hours last night watching non-stop cable coverage of the Trump-Comey story, I expected hundreds if not thousands of people to attend a demonstration today at the intersection of Wabash and Wacker immediately across the Chicago River from the Trump Tower--that being the unofficial site for anti-Trump demonstrations.

Science

Today some 40,000 Chicagoans participated in the March for Science, a nonpartisan demonstration that had heavy partisan overtones.  There certainly weren't Trumpians in evidence. It is hard not to be anti-Trump if you are scientist:  Trump wants to cut funding for science; Trump wants to politicize scientific research in an effort to support his anti-science policies (anti-vax, anti-climate, anti-research); and Trump wants to rely on alternative facts.
