Frozen Shards
At 1PM, the temperature is down to 5-degrees Fahrenheit, but the wind chill makes it feel like 10 to 15 degrees below-zero. Layers are essential, but unfortunately, I have not found a pair of gloves that allows me to operate at camera without taking them off. Yes, I know about the hinged-fingertip gloves. The solution is to head to Starbucks every hour or so, which means drinking lots of coffee.
I think it has been several winters since we have seen the Chicago River frozen solid, except for the spots where the hot solid waste flows into the river, and even those spots are freezing over. I am standing on the steps of the new Apple store's plaza. It had been cordoned off earlier this week due to the icicles hanging from the store's roof. There is also a gigantic crack in one of the glass window panels. I am looking southwest toward the Michigan Avenue (DuSable) bridge. Note that there are no cars or other vehicles on the bridge. The cold snap is now over a week old. People are like the dog I saw the other day headed out for a walk. It crossed the street after coming out the front door of the building. Despite the owner's efforts, it turned and ran back to the front door. If you don't need to go out, you don't, which means the streets are largely deserted, except for one idiot photographer.
The Chicago River is getting cleaner, but it still is pretty muddy looking except on Saint Patrick's Day when the Chicago Plumber's Union dyes it green. So today the color is a bit unusual--blue ice. You gotta love winter.
